International Dog Day 2025: Show Love, Support Adoption, and Save Lives

This special day also raises awareness about the importance of adopting dogs, preventing abuse, and ensuring their well-being.

Happy International Dog Day

History of International Dog Day

International Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, an animal behaviourist and advocate, to recognise the role of dogs in our lives and to encourage adoption of rescue dogs from shelters.

The date, 26 August, was chosen because it marked the day Paige’s own family adopted their first dog. Since then, the observance has gained worldwide recognition and participation.

This is why, every year on 26th August, people around the world celebrate International Dog Day—a day dedicated to honouring one of humankind’s most loyal and loving companions.

More than just pets, dogs are protectors, helpers, and family members who bring unconditional love, joy, and comfort to our lives.

Dogs have been considered humans’ best friends for centuries. They provide emotional support, help guard homes, assist the police and military, guide the visually impaired, and even play a role in rescue operations. Their loyalty and unconditional love make them an inseparable part of many families across the world.

International Dog Day is not only about celebrating pet dogs but also about spreading awareness for stray and abandoned dogs.

On this day, animal lovers and organisations encourage people to adopt dogs from shelters rather than buying them from breeders. Campaigns and events are organised to highlight the importance of proper care, vaccination, and protection of dogs from cruelty.

Dogs symbolise loyalty, selflessness, and unconditional love. They often teach us important values, such as compassion, patience, and kindness.

International Dog Day reminds us that caring for these wonderful creatures goes beyond affection—it’s about responsibility, respect, and protecting their rights as living beings.
